Spanning 124 kilometers and covering an area of 163,000 hectares Fraser Island has developed over a period of 800,000 thousand years. Showcasing spectacular eroded sculptures of iron-rich coloured sands, over 40 rare freshwater lakes, each its own unique shape and colour, towering rainforests dating back 1,000 years, the world's only rainforest growing in sand, crystal clear creeks, swampy wetlands, heathlands bright with wildflower sand sweeping beaches lined with Pandanus palms.

Lake McKenzie

Lake McKenzie is one of Island's best-known freshwater lakes. It is a refreshing swimming spot and has good camping and picnic facilities nearby. Lake Wabby is the deepest of the Island's lakes and is surrounded by a massive sand-blow. Lake Allom is an attractive small lake with a forest backdrop. If you are lucky, you may encounter its special inhabitants - tortoises.

Eli Creek

Eli Creek is the largest freshwater creek along the east coast, with over four million litres of water flowing from its mouth onto the eastern beach and into the ocean every hour! The swift current makes for an invigorating swim.

The Cathedrals

The Cathedrals are towering cliffs of multicoloured sands sculptured by the wind into huge peaks. The Champagne Pools, beautiful rock pools filled with bubbling seawater, are excellent swimming holes at low tide and are located at Middle Rocks, just north of Indian Head.

Ship Wreck

The Wreck of the Maheno is located just north of Happy Valley on the eastern beach. The vessel had been a well-known trans-Tasman liner and was heading for a Japanese wrecking yard when she was driven ashore during a cyclone in 1935. Today the hull lies slowly deteriorating in the harsh salt environment.

First discovery of Fraser Island

The first discovery by Europeans dates back to May 1770 when Captain James Cook sailed by. While passing he noticed the aboriginals on a high rock. As the Europeans referred to the native people as “indians” he named the rock “Indian Rock” nowadays a popular tourist destination. The first “white” people started settling on Fraser Island at around 1860 and began felling trees.

Fraser Island's Name

The name Fraser Island comes from Eliza Fraser and her story of survival from a shipwreck on the island. The ship ‘Stirling Castle’ was shipwrecked on the island in 1836. The longboat, carrying Captain Fraser, his wife and ten others was at sea for 32 days before it was decided to row ashore at Orchid Beach, Fraser Island. The group was captured by local aboriginals and set to work. Captain Fraser was soon killed when he was too weak to work. Eliza Fraser was rescued eventually 3 months after the ship wreck . The story of hardship that Eliza Fraser told after her rescue, led to the new name of Fraser Island.
